5 Reasons Why it’s OK to Have a Bad Day

Every single person experiences a bad day at some point in their lives. Old, young, rich, poor, famous… Even that “friend” on social media who seems to have the most perfect life. Trust me, they all have bad days too.

Ever had one of those days where from the moment you wake up, everything goes wrong? I’m having one of those days today. I broke my toilet chain, I made my sandwich with mouldy bread and only realised half way through eating it, I missed my train, I sent an important email to the wrong person, I spilt a can of Diet Coke all over my desk and my phone is on 10% battery. Oh yeah, and it’s only lunch time!

Yes, I know that in the grand scheme of things my day isn’t that bad, I’m still smiling and I’ve experienced days that have been much worse on a more serious level, but seeing as today hasn’t been my best day, I thought it was a good day to try and be positive and share my thoughts with you on why it’s OK to have a bad day! (Sorry for saying day WAY too many times…)

1. It makes us human. We don’t have superpowers and we have to work hard to get to where we want to be. Sometimes the hard work we do can get on top of us and that is perfectly normal. Having a bad day just proves we are human and it’s a great excuse to have a day off and treat ourselves.

2. Appreciation. If every day was a good day, would it feel good? I suppose having a bad day puts life into perspective and shows that most days are actually alright and we are pretty lucky to be alive. Negative emotions make the positive emotions feel even better.

3. Support. Having a bad day can bring you closer to your loved ones and prove that you do have people there for you. After all, who doesn’t love grovelling to their boyfriend about their terrible day only to be rewarded with hugs, kisses and chocolates?!

4. Strength. Getting through the worst day of your life proves you can do anything. You have strength.Β Having a bad day doesn’t mean you are weak, so make sure you remind yourself how strong you are and never forget it.

5. The Future. It can only get better from here, right?! Do not dwell on the past or the present and look towards the future. Every bad day you are having now will be a distant memory in a few weeks/months time. Time heals. So look forward and think positively about the future.

Do you think it’s OK to have a bad day? Anyone else having a day like me?!

  1. I had the WORST day the other day, let me run you through it…

    1) 03:30 – I woke up at with really bad hayfever, puffy eyes, accordion chest – the works.

    2) 04:00 I couldn’t go back to sleep and was tossing and turning, waking up my partner. Decided to get out of bed to stop disturbing her (boyfriend of the year)

    3) 04:45 After sitting on the sofa in the dark with my eyes close contemplating life, decided to go to the big tesco by my house for breakfast

    4) 05:00 Get to tesco, only to find out its not 24h as I thought it was (only lived here 10 months now… awks). And only found out by a security telling me when I was 15m into the shop…

    5) 05:15 I drive to a tesco I KNOW is 24h hours to get breakfast… I come out with 5 granola cookies and a hayfever nasal spray (glamourous)

    6) 05:30 Sat in the car park, ate all 5 cookies, which I couldn’t taste because of the blocked nose. Tried using the nasal spray… let’s just say the nose was so blocked it didn’t really work!!

    7) 05:45 Arrive at work, to find I’ve forgotten my work pass, so have to wait outside in the rain for 20 mins for the “24h” security to let me in!

All of that before 6am… I can’t even remember the rest of the day as the morning was too traumatic!

    1. Freddy – thank you so so much for your comment. I’m sorry you had such a bad day but you managed to explain it in such a comical way I can’t help but smile! I would love to know about the rest of your day – I do hope it improved!! Ps I get hayfever so I can totally sympathise Xx

  2. Number 1 and 4 especially ring true with me! I remember having a terrible day when I was younger, and my extremely frugal mother took me to Godiva and bought us chocolate. It’s one of my favorite memories with my mom because we didn’t sit down and try to solve anything, we just treated ourselves for a moment.

  3. Love posts like this! There is so much pressure to be happy, positive etc out there in society that most people don’t like admitting they have had a bad day as it makes them feel guilty or they are afraid they will come across as weak or whining to others.

Bad days happen. That’s what makes the good days recognisable! Bad days make life interesting even if we don’t welcome them. And we should all recognise it is part of being human to have them and that it is okay to have a light hearted moan about them too.

That’s real life and not this fantastical, bouncy, ever positive existence we all pretend to have to the outside world. It is okay to have the occasional ‘Meh!’ *smiles*

  5. Not today but yes I have such days too. I mean, who doesn’t? Once I woke up to find my phone dead hence no alarm and I got late to school. There I had a test about which no one told me and suffice it to say that it didn’t go well. When coming home I faced a lot of traffic. I was happy that I have to go to a wedding in the evening but couldn’t prep or relax due to pending work. Finally at the wedding, the food turned out to be awful and only seat I could manage was near the dance floor and the speakers hurt my ears. Even today when I think of it I can hear Lean On ringing in my ears… Argh!

This part of your post literally made me feel better about my ”bad day”. πŸ˜€ It started quite bad, but after reading this, you reminded me that it is all about our perception, and what we tell ourselves. Sure it’s a bad day- or, it JUST started out like one, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t change my point of view about it. There is still time to change it all! πŸ˜€ Thank you for writing this post! πŸ˜€
